What is Corporate Social Investment?
Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is the strategic investment by corporates of resources in cash and kind, in projects that will have a measureable positive impact on disadvantaged communities by providing sustainable access to the economy.
The Mercedes-Benz Group of Companies in South Africa CSI strategy
A number of long-standing nation-building partnerships have been established with the Business Trust, Business Against Crime, National Business Initiative, Business Leadership SA and Business Unity SA where challenges facing South Africa are addressed by leveraging the combined skills and resources of government and the corporate sector.
In addition to the aforementioned initiatives, the annual CSI budget is allocated to a portfolio of CSI projects in the key focus areas (kfa’s) of education, the environment, HIV and Aids and safer communities, as well as both skills sharing and ‘sweat-based’ employee volunteering initiatives.
The greater proportion of this CSI budget, namely 72%, is allocated to projects in the two kfa’s of education and HIV and Aids, as we believe that dedicated focus is required on the sustainable well-being and prosperity of current and future employees in the vehicle industry, as well as the broader base of South African citizens.
One further noteworthy point is that 45% of the abovementioned annual total CSI budget is allocated to projects which are based in the Border Kei Region of the Eastern Cape, home of the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plant.
